The client
Somerset Veterinary Hospital in Ames, Iowa, was founded by Charles Felz, DVM, after a geographic study showed a need for a veterinary practice in the area.
The challenge
Instead of renting and modifying an existing space, Dr. Felz decided to hire local architects and builders to build the hospital from the ground up. In May 2011, Dr. Felz attended a seminar where BerryDunn Principal Gary I. Glassman, CPA, was one of the key speakers. “We didn’t get any type of start-up training or business strategy planning in vet school, so Gary’s talk about starting up a veterinary practice was invaluable to me,” said Dr. Felz.
The solution
BerryDunn, formerly Burzenski & Company, helped Dr. Felz during the initial start-up of his business while also planning for the long-term strategy for the practice. The BerryDunn team provided an array of services for Somerset, including:
- Planning strategically for the future of the practice
- Handling the practice’s accounting and preparing staff for tax liabilities
- Creating benchmarks for pricing services and inventory specific to the Ames area
The outcome
Somerset Veterinary Hospital offers preventative health care services for cats and dogs. Services include house calls, dentistry, anesthesia, pain management, surgery, internal medicine, after-hours emergency care, and dermatology. They are AAHA accredited and have won several awards, including Best Veterinarian in Story County.
