Rural Health System Begins Transition to a Single EHR Solution

A rural health system, with a 25-bed critical access hospital and several clinics, was using multiple electronic health record (EHR) systems in emergency department, inpatient, and outpatient settings. The organization sought a single EHR across all settings to enhance transparency, provide a single source of truth for all patient information, and gain better access to patient information.

BerryDunn’s team:

  • Worked with stakeholders—nurses, doctors, billers, coders, pharmacists, lab technicians, information technology (IT) staff, and senior leadership—to gain an initial understanding of the operating environment and EHR software
  • Developed and issued a Request for Proposals (RFP)
  • Provided analysis of the proposed vendor software
  • Developed demonstration scripts and facilitated vendor demonstrations
  • Facilitated reference calls with peer facilities currently using candidate vendor software systems
  • Planned and facilitated site visits to references
  • Helped the organization’s board of directors to understand the value of the proposed software via vendor and cost-analysis updates

As a result of this work, the facility was able to:

  • Improve patient safety
  • Increase efficiency across settings
  • Achieve standardization
  • Strengthen integration
  • Support the continuum of care
  • Comply with regulations
