Averett University IT Effectiveness

Client Description

Averett University has a network of more than ten campuses and Learning Sites throughout Virginia. Students can pursue their degree in the classroom and on the Internet.

Problem/Issue

Averett University faced multiple challenges, including the need to better manage Information Technology (IT) services at its regional learning centers, to engage the right stakeholders in planning for evolving IT needs, and to find the right balance of technical, management, and leadership skills in a small IT department. University leadership sought an independent and objective assessment of the IT organization, hardware and software, IT operations, services, and technology decision making and planning.

BerryDunn’s Solution/Approach

BerryDunn planned a series of interviews and work sessions to understand the University’s current IT environment. Throughout our assessment, we considered case information from industry publications such as EDUCAUSE and effective practices used in institutions of similar sizes and operations.

We prepared an assessment and recommendations report addressing governance and planning, IT management and operations, the applications environment, technical projects, and security. These recommendations were later applied to an “IT Roadmap” that prioritized IT initiatives based on cost, degree of impact, and feasibility.

Outcomes

  • Established the role of IT leadership.
  • Established a new governance structure that fosters engagement and effectiveness in IT decision making.
  • Provided recommendations for developing an IT service and support model that aligns with the University’s needs.
  • Assisted in the identification and prioritization of high-priority technical projects.
